The Seven Deadly Sins

 

1.  Envy:  AKA (also known as):Invidia (Latin): displeasure at the good of another; pleasure at their failings; ingratitude for our own gifts and   longing for someone else's; chronic dissatisfaction.
    
Antidote: loving excellence for its own sake; "keep(ing) step with the spirit" (Gal 5:25); developing the "Cardinal Virtues" which apply to the following sins too.

2. Greed: AKA: Avaritia; craving; avarice preoccupation with material things; security; "This is mine!"; miser (which comes from the same root as "miserable")
     Antidote: generosity;giving away things you value; secret giving (Matt 6:3); giving cheerfully (2 Cor. 9:7)

3.  Gluttony: AKA: Gulaa; any appetite that isn't restrained; addiction; eating, drinking, sleeping, or playing to excess
     Antidoteperiodic fasting from whatever appetite tempts; "buffeting" the body into compliance (1 Cor. 9:27).

4.  Anger: AKA: Ira; ire; rage;resentment; bitterness; indignation
     Antidotecompassion; gentleness; quick settlement (Eph. 4:26).

5. Sloth: AKA: Accidia; Inegligence; apathy; despondency; hopelessness; avoiding what needs to be done or else doing it listlessly.
    Antidote: courage; faithfulness; enthusiasm; being fully alive; serving "heartily" (Col. 3:23)

6. Lust: AKA: Luxuria; to "luxuriate," letting thoughts soak in anything that's impure; gratification without giving.
   
Antidote: "You are not your own, you are bought with a price.  Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

7.  Pride: AKA; Superbia; superiority ("at least I'm better than...."); entitlement ("I deserve more.")
     Antidote:  humility; "consider others better than yourself" (
Phil. 2:3); recognizing that every good thing about me comes from God, who expects each gift to be used in serving.
